The Sloatsburg Public LIbrary is a vital community resource that provides a wide range of programs, activities, resources and life-long learning opportunities to village residents and those in the Suffern Central School District.
The library features weekly programs, has ongoing clubs for adults and children, offers opportunities to learn, exchange information and become a part of the community.
From modest beginnings…
The Sloatsburg Public Library dates its origin to 1959 when a committee of six, appointed by then Mayor John McAlevey, accumulated 6,000 used books and shelved them in the meeting room of the Village Office. Susanne Dowler, longtime resident of Sloatsburg and a teacher in the Ramapo School District, was the library’s co-founder and first Director.
Part of the Ramapo Catskill Library System cooperative, the library now has a total floor space of some 5,500 sq. ft. and is open Monday through Saturday. The library’s Community Room is a multi-functional space that hosts events, activities, life music, organizational meetings and more.
The library has a dedicated Children’s Room that is home to weekly activities that help promote early childhood learning.
As the community has grown, so has the library.
